I Like Round Hedges and I Cannot Lie

You guys (and gals!) I like these soooo much; it’s kind of a sick obsession.

Can you blame me?!?

Cloud Pruning – Sounds dreamy……

These are from a magical place in Thailand.  I would like to pluck one of these Lorax trees and put it in my pocket.  And hug it.  And love it.  Forever.

I can’t really put my finger on why I love this look so. very. much.  It could be the concept of wildness tamed… something I have yet to achieve in my own home, with those 4 loco boys of mine.  It could be that it’s just plain beautiful and zen and fairytale inspired.  But hey, that’s just me.

So, yes I need me some round, buxom, green hedges in the backyard.  This is part of my vision…. a plan that is slowly (TOO SLOWLY) forming.

Which leads me to the thought… Are there specific species of hedges that are made for this type of topiary?  And (is this just me being crazy?!) are there any options that are drought tolerant?

Aren’t I just so difficult?  (Husband is nodding like crazy… trying to avert my eyes)  Well, I just want, what I want, when I want it.

So, I’m starting here at Monrovia to see what they recommend, and I’m kinda digging the Winter Gem Boxwood.  Real purdy.  Of course it needs to be watered once a week and I’m thinking that I can live with that.

It’s also sold at Lowe’s, so I’ll call that a win-win!!  (I have literally returned a pile of dirt to them and they have refunded my money.  That guarantee on the plants is no joke.)

Now, how may of these suckers am I going to need for my green clouds??

And then, of course, how the heck am I going to get them to grow into perfectly round, delicious spheres?  (You totally thought I was going to say balls.)

  1. I love boxwood! Sometimes they carry 20 gallon boxwood at Home Depot for 10 bucks each. Mine have done great here in SF, even with the draught. Looking forward to seeing how this goes for you, I think you’ll easily round them.
