Gender Neutral Nursery!

Guess what, chicken butt?!

Can you believe my luck that I have another bestie that’s literally giving birth any day now?  And the fun part (not sure for who, cause I’m DYING) is that no one knows if it’s going to be a girl or a boy!!  Or as I like to say, a taco or a noodle.  Yeah.  I’m gross.  Deal.

So just for giggles I put together a gender neutral nursery that I think she would love.  Here’s what I know about Julie’s design taste – she’s a big fan of gray in interiors, likes more muted colors, and is a beach girl; She’s from Venice, for gosh sakes!

Enjoy the virtual eye candy!!

Want to know if it works for a little lady?  Just by swapping out the throw, it looks so different!  Imagine with peachy pink bedding!

Those baby llamas very much tug at my heart.  It also happens that recently Julie and I fed llamas together.  See what else I found below?  MORE Llamas!  Ack!  They’re so freaking cute!!

The table and chairs are super adorable and come in a bunch of colors.  I played around with the colors on my screen, to get this combo, but man, I really like the blue.  And the green.  And the orange.  Honestly, they’d all work here since the background is fairly neutral.

Anyhoo, I’m VERY excited about holding all these sweet smelling nuggets in the near future.  I know that my little guy will look like a giant next to them and I will feel a momentary pang of sadness that the baby in him is almost gone.  That should last approximately 30 seconds.

Say a little prayer for my girl!!  She’s going to do AWESOME and will probably be running marathons with a kid in each arm in no time.

Gender Neutral Playroom

Hi y’all!

Today I’m having a bit of fun designing a gender neutral playroom for one of my besties!  “She’s Pregnant!” and of course I just shouted it out like Oprah!!  Now check under your seats!  Um, that was disappointing.  The seat thing, not the pregnancy – duh.  I am OVER THE MOON, CRAZY ECSTATIC for her!!  And being that I’m all up in the beeswax, I get to reminisce about the lovely pregnancy parts and laugh my ass off at the sucky stuff.  Being pregnant is NO joke.  On the count of three, worst part about being pregnant….1. 2. 3. Getting dressed!!  Arg, I hated picking out clothes in the morning.  My friend was telling me how uncomfortable wearing a bra was becoming.  I’m like, Yo in month 9 that thing will feel like a freaking noose!  Amiright?!

Anyway, most of it is wonderful and fun and full of (my favorite) shopping!  She has a suite off the master bedroom that she’s going to dedicate to the baby, so planning a nursery isn’t really in the cards.  But a playroom?!  That can double as a guest room?  Oh yes, girl need that.

The room in question is right off the living room, which has this color palate.

I wanted to keep the colors the same since the rooms are right next to each other.  So without further ado, here are some ideas for a super fun, gender neutral play room!  All that’s missing are the billions of toys!!

This sofa is dope.  For $500 they will add in a bed, which is such a great deal.  And the size is customizable, and the cushions can be slip covered, and I’m totally buying my next sofa from them.  I adore the idea of a coffee table/kids table.  This one is 16″ high, with a marble top, so it’s basically indestructible and perfect for toddler Panton chairs to slip under.  The two side tables would easily adjust to bedside tables, and maybe a sconce or two over the sofa would be a great addition.  Cummon, that elephant stool!  Too cute!  The rug is large at 9×12 but it’s under $200.  The kids can spill spaghetti or barf all over it and you won’t have a heart attack.

Toy storage!!  And a fun chair to spin around in.  Yes please.

All that’s missing is a bit of book storage and some whimsy, which is where these pieces come in.  I’m 50-50 on the teepee idea, but that’s because I have 4 rambunctious hooligans; that teepee wouldn’t last 5 minutes in my house.  But one kid, maybe two and it should survive… a little longer at least!!  I think a mirror is a great addition, long enough for baby to check themselves out and possibly for dress-up later.

Of course, in all my searching I found some other stuff I liked too… I have been crushing hard on this rug from Nate Berkus.  It totally works and would add some softness…

I also found so many chair options… I see them and I think, would I want to sit in that chair??  Does it beacon me??  This one does.  Bigly.

My favorites though might be these…  They are definitely riskier, but they are so COOL.  And a steal for $200 bucks.  I could see kids doing some weird shit with these.

That’s it!!

I hope she has fun looking at these boards and maybe you’ve found something new to stare at!!  All sources below.

Things I can’t get my mind off right now…

Hi Friends!

Can you believe that I wrote this totally gung-ho post about getting outta a rut and I’m still lagging SO much?!  Grr.  It’s hard, man.  I’ve been pretty busy at work, which is great, but also not – you know what I mean?  I love my day job actually, but after a stressful day, do I want to sew some curtains?  No.  I do not.

Alas, my struggle to get into the Madonna groove continues…with a teeny bit of progress here and there.  On the plus, I’m feeling a WHOLE LOT better.  Phew.

So, what’s up with me?  Well, I’m very happily drooling over some cool stuff.  Maybe you are into a few of these right now as well!!

Goddammit collars are cool.  Like all my shirts must now have a collar and I’ve got to button it all the way up.  Shirt, get in my cart NOW!!

Elle Decor’s cover photo has been whispering to me.  Nonstop.  And, you guys, it’s from June.

I don’t care if every room in the world is white right now, I still love a fiery red!

Deep breath.  It’s so good, right?!  Is it plaster?  Is it stone?  I NEED to know.  ASAP.  And the chairs – I’m obsessed with them.  In fact, I want to know more about this whole house, but where o’ where is this photo from???  Does any one know?  I found it here

Is this the sofa I’ve been dreaming of?  It could be.

Like this one, from Nordstrom for only $113.

It’s so genius and versatile.  Imagine a lovely plant… it would really spice up a drab bathroom.

I think that’s it for now.  These are the fun things that have been occupying my mind when I’m not scrambling to get 4 boys out the door or making grocery lists… How can such little people eat so very much?

Talk to you soon!

Happy Floral July!

Red, White and Blue!  Whoot whoot!!

Oh, how I love you liberty, freedom and democracy.  I also happen to like fireworks very much… not that they really have anything to do with the above, but as a symbol, they’re pretty much the coolest.  (Ya, I did just bust out a mom-ism.)

Why not celebrate the 4th with flowers that look like fireworks?!?  Flowers + Fireworks = Insanely better than Zombies + Austen.  And much more patriotic too.

These are all drought tolerant… I’m really testing my flower skills here, courtesy of Annie’s Annuals, which can be shipped all over the states… actually I love their site.  You type in the parameters and zone, and they spit out a list of beautiful green stuff that will work for you.  So without further ado…

With a name like Blow Wives, how can you not plant this sucker en masse?

Allium Schubertii has blooms over 12″ across!

Gymea Lily has stalks that are  over 20 feet tall!  Yes, you read that right.

Dianthus arenarius are different… a sea of tiny flowers!

Selago Serrata

Garlic Chives, who’da thunk?

Red Hedgehog Agave is big and bold!

Showy Milkweed has huge clusters of flowers.

Cephalophyllum pillansii

These are just a few fun flowers that really caught my eye!  I especially love the fact that they can all thrive in the heat with low water needs… there’s literally nothing I love more than an independent flower.  Who’s looking for another needy thing in their life?  Not me.

Have a wonderful 4th.  Put that memory to the test with a recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.  Still got it??  You go!

An Update to the Side Yard

Hi there friends!!

Here’s a quick update post about our little side yard.  It may not be all that exciting to some of you, then again, with all the lawn hating going on these days, you just might be very interested.

More lawn gone, you ask.  Yup.  Seems to be a trend around here.

Of course, here’s a part of my yard that I so BADLY wanted a lawn.  In fact, we tried everything to grow a strong, lush, green lawn and in the process, we spent lots and LOTS of money.  None of it held up very well since the soil is pretty much the worst ever.

IMG_0111 IMG_2471

This second picture was one of those time where we kinda had a lawn.  This was right after we put in the ficus all around the fence to cover our neighbors ripped privacy screen, which drives me Gwen Stefani BANANAS.  That screen has died.  Let’s just bury the thing already.  Amiright?!

That little slope was also once the home of a huge pine tree that was knocked down in a crazy windstorm.  Needless to say, over the years there have been a few changes… some are working, some just ain’t.

The plan was easy.  Dig up the dirt about 3-4″.  Cover this with a steel mesh to deter any gophers.  Add in a retaining wall for the dirt and to make the hill look legit.  Add a drip system to the side greenery and hill.  And then grade the whole play area with decomposed granite.

Now, we have this.

The frog?  A vintage find from an old park.  The plane?  From Costco – Where else?

Let’s break it down, shall we?

The retaining wall?  Each wood piece was $20 and we needed 14 = $280

The mesh I bought here and needed 5 rolls for a 700 sqft space, $66 x 5 = $330

The landscape edging, $20 for each piece x 6 = $120

Drip stuff (I can’t tell you every piece here) was $200

The big cost?  The DG was $25 a scoop and $50 for delivery.  I bought 12 scoops for $385

And then of course, there’s the labor portion of the whole thing.

I didn’t lift one. single. finger.

Digging out, refilling, leveling the whole thing was $500.

Capping the old lines, and adding in the drip system $100

Putting in the retaining wall and edging $100

All in all, it was a cool 2 grand.

With our goodies put back, it’s like our very own playground.

I love it so very much.

It’s funny, the hub doesn’t really get too involved in my grand schemes, but when I told him I was thinking of doing this project he definitely eyed me suspiciously.  He didn’t say no, but he wasn’t enthused either.  Now that it’s done, he’s beyond thrilled.

It just looks so clean.  Weird word, I know.  But it does.  It’s intentional now.  This space makes sense.

We are thinking of adding a few more shade sails, flowers, and benches… you know, the fun stuff!  All in due time Watson!
