Time After Time thoughts…

Hi Friends!

Wow, it’s been a hectic last few weeks.  Isn’t summertime supposed to be relaxing?!

My sister got married, which was INCREDIBLE and I did her shower/bachelorette locally three weeks ago and then headed up a week later, super north, to Eureka for the vows.  There just something so delicious about young love!  Some days it feels like only yesterday that I was in her shoes… 27, fun as hell, traveling the world, being spontaneous (like what even is that word anymore?!), with soooo many less grey hairs and wrinkles and self-doubt and daily struggles.  10+ years have passed and yes, I’m still kind of that person, but I’m also not.  Do you ever feel that way?  It’s gotta be a mom struggle because so much of our lives are spent taking care of other people (who usually don’t appreciate us and don’t think we’re the coolest for enforcing teeth brushing or any kind of hygiene, for that matter.)

My friend lent me What Alice Forgot, a book about a woman who loses her memories from the last 10 years.  GF, doesn’t even remember her kids.  I devoured this during the whole wedding fun weeks, and it really struck a cord.

And then, just this week someone close to me lost their lovely mother to a long struggle with cancer.  They knew the time was near and the immediate family was there to say good-bye and sing her into her next adventure.  My own mother-in-law has been battling breast cancer for almost 2 years now… and it’s all just a bit scary, right?

In the midst of all this, (my non-stop mind swirl) was Cyndi Lauper.  I had gotten tickets to see Rod Stewart for my mom’s 60th birthday way back in January, not realizing we’d be knee deep in my sister’s wedding prep at the time of the concert.  We were SO exhausted from her bachelorette, that honestly, I didn’t expect much.  But once Cyndi opened the show, it was inspiring.  She’s inspiring and it was just what my little heart needed.

She was so f-ing incredible.  I teared up listening to Time After Time.  We love and we lose, we grow and change and reminisce and it’s beautiful and painful.  And yet, do we really have any other choice?  That one song brought out the little girl in me, the carefree 20 year old and me of today.  Who will the me of tomorrow be?

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about her a lot lately.  In fact, she’s kinda my new hero.  Cyndi is Cyndi, whether you like her or not.  I’ve decided that I want to be like her VERY MUCH.  I want to live boldly and unapologetically, in COLOR!  With an arm full of bangles, or a console full of treasures, baubles galore, with sets that don’t match and a sorrynotsorry attitude.

Cyndi is an inspiration as a person, as a performer, as a woman and icon.  I’M OBSESSED with her style!!  In a world of vanilla, she is rainbow sherbet.

Color is finally coming back and I hope with it, comes fun and whimsy and uniqueness and maybe just a little nostalgia.

I thought these were some rooms she might have fun in.

Dare to be bold.

Happy New Year! Let’s Get Cleansing

Happy New Year My Peeps!!

I am feeling so… optimistic about this year. I REALLY want it to be a good one.

And I have to tell you that 2017 was a bit rough for our family – not in terrible ways or even really that bad. It just wasn’t GREAT, y’know? And honestly, it hasn’t started off that well so far because all 6 of us have been recovering from the WORST. COLD. IN. THE. UNIVERSE. It’s the sickness that doesn’t die.
Listen sickness. I’m going to kill you. It’s on.

So, in the spirit of get rid of bad germs/vibes/negative energy, I’m thinking I’ll start 2018 by doing a cleansing of the house. I’m not entirely sure I believe in it all, but hey, I DO believe in the placebo effect!! If I WILL it, IT WILL BE!! I found this easy to understand article here about burning sage or sandalwood. Yes. I can do that. Easily enough, I plopped over to Etsy and grabbed 3 bundles from Weekend Warrior TX for $3.75 for a 3″er. There is a 5″ option, but maybe that seems like a lot… or perhaps I needed a 10″ with these knuckleheads. Who knows? We’ll see how cleansed I feel after one, and the others should make a nice gift to my mom and friend. (Hi Mom!)

So that’s fun.

I’m not sure how crazy I’m going to get with resolutions, but I definitely need to get my butt back into the powder room with some drywall and I’d love to grow my following on Chairish. Selling has been a surprising new hobby, that has certainly taken me away from home stuff, but I’m having fun for now and I’m all about letting my heart roam where it wants. One day, fix up a vintage piece… the next sew up a cushion. I’m happy with that.

Of course, if I had to nail down a few improvements I’m looking to make this year, it’s to keep the house tidier and to drink more water and to HAVE MORE FUN!! My boys have been slowly coming around to helping me more with chores and that’s going to continue (much to their dismay, I’m sure). In the past, I held on for dear life and was just happy if there were clean socks in the morning. But it’s the future now and it’d be nice if I didn’t say things like “dear life.” Or things like, “Did you flush?”, “What’s in that tissue on the floor?”, “How long has it been since we cleaned your ears?” I literally said all of these before 8am this morning. So, baby steps.

And progress is really all we can aim for. Be better humans. Period. And if you’re feeling damn extra, figure out why the lights keep making those weird noises.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
and

Let’s just chat…

So how are ya?

You guys, I have seen Holiday decorations out!!  I can’t believe it’s already that time.  Already!!  (Breathing into bag.)  WTF?  And I had so many plans and projects and just STUFF that I wanted to get done before crazy times set in.  I’m seriously going to have to get into over-drive and sprint to the finish line.  I think I can do it… Affirmation, affirmation!

I’m close to finishing up the fireplace – I’m hoping that I’ll get a few quiet moments this week and then grout next week.  That’s the plan at least!  I would have gotten a lot more done if I hadn’t been scooping up awesome stuff all over the place.  Look at this dresser!!  The top is a mess, but there is so much potential here, amiright?  The biggest issue is that it smells smoky.  I’ve put a bowl of vinegar in the top drawer, but if you have any suggestions send ’em my way please!!

As if that weren’t enough, on the way to pick up the boys from school I found this chair at a Monday estate sale (I didn’t know those existed!!) for $3 DOLLARS!  I love it so much and now I just need 3 more to complete my set.  Of course, I didn’t notice a small hole in the rattan until I got home, but maybe I can fix it.  Have any of you tried that?  I can show you another photo once I clean it up, but she’ll be nice and pretty with a little TLC.

And the sofa is here!!  I need to take some photos and share but I kinda wanted to get new pillows first.  The old ones look so sad on the new blue beauty, Smirfette.  I was contemplating buying this fabric, had it in the cart and everything, but it’s dry clean only.

I don’t do dry cleaning.  But I’m tempted to buy it and just see what happens in the wash on delicates… would it bleed all over the place and snag and shrink??  What do you think?  Too risky…

Project Runway is in full swing and I am, OF COURSE, watching and loving every minute.  It’s the first time they have a set of twins on the show and it is pure t.v. magic.  They are so dramatic, so strange, SOOOOO annoying, everyone hates them, and I don’t ever want them to get kicked off!!

As a mother of twins, I’m so congniscent of weird twin behavior so we can nip any traces of it in the bud.  I tell them, “Knock that weird twin shit off!”  No, I don’t.  Well, not yet at least.  But if I had to, I would.  For humanity, y’know.

Speaking of Project Runway, did you know that they have a clothing line?  They do!  It’s a little…what’s the word? Much.  Like an off the shoulder bomber jacket…hmmm?  But I saw this sweater and it’s kinda speaking my morning drop off language!

I haven’t bought it because I’ve kinda been trying to curb my shopping habits.  I’ve been doing really well with the clothes stuff, but not so good with everything else.  Whoopsie!!  Before I started my whole embargo thing, I did snag this shirt –

But you guys, I haven’t worn it yet!  Do little kids know what AF stands for?  Like, can I wear this to pick up the boys at school or to the baseball field?  I NEED your help!!  Thoughts please!!

And that’s about it.

I’ll check in later!
