I’m ready for my cocktail, well, almost!

You know a few weeks ago when we were all making these lofty resolutions?  Well, I knew what mine needed to be – clear out the garage.  Finish the darn projects that had taken over my life in the form of a nonexistent parking spot for our massive minivan.

Do you want to know the “garage project count?”  1 MCM dresser, 1 club chair, 2 wicker chairs, no wait 4 wicker chairs, 2 outdoor sofas, 2 shelves, parts for a new bench, my other street chair find and 1 marble table.  I think that’s it… pretty sure.  Just ran to check and I missed the campaign dresser.

First on the list, the street find.  Remember her?

So much potential huh?  But lacking in the drawer department.  What happened to the other 4 drawers?!?  We’ll never know.

My thought was to keep 3 drawers in the middle and make the two sides into shelves.  So, I did just that!  Using a few tools (mostly my dremel’s) and a bit o’ brute force, I was able to remove the drawer innards.

Then I purchased some birch plywood, the nicest of the cheap stuff they sell at Lowes.  Cut ’em to size, stained them and whispered sweet dreams of gorgeous bar accessories to them.

I tried so hard to match the existing stain.  It wasn’t easy and if I’m honest with myself, it’s not perfect.  After 3 attempts, I called it a day and went with the best option.  I talked myself off the ledge by reminding myself that no one would really notice… not with all the stuff I was going to cram on the shelves.

The worst part of the piece was that it had been seriously mistreated.  Lots of paint, gum, crap of all forms was crusted and fused on it.  Stage 1 involved a cleaning with Murphy’s Wood Soap.  This stuff was amazing!!  It got rid of most of the yuck.

But this below?  Well, that took a hair dryer and a scraper.

This strange alienish glob had made it it’s mission to ruin all my hopes and dreams of pretty (and clean).  It’s difficult to tell, but that sucker is about the size of a half dollar – and stubborn!  Once I heated it a bit, it came off in one piece (!!!), without any damage (!!!) within 5-10 seconds (!!!).  Mind blown.  The hair dryer also took off paint flecks  – such a fun trick to have up your sleeve.

Next on the agenda?  Fixing the blotchy stain.  Which I did with a rub down of new stain, and then I sealed it all with 2 coats of polyurethane.

Ta Da!

Not too shabby for a piece I nabbed from a random corner, for free!

And as for the dreams of a cocktail, well those will have to be put on hold for now.  I so wanted to fill the shelves with glassware and barware and underwear, but hey, with a toddler running around the house grabbing and throwing everything he can get his hands on, I think I’ll just wait until he’s off to preschool for that… And then of course, I’ll have to lock it all up when the boys hit high school.

Oh, the evolution of a home with a bunch of wild animals inhabiting it.

Present company included!

Rugs and more rugs…

Yes, my friends, the debate continues… so much so, that you may soon ask yourself, “How long can Jessica string this rug thing along?”

Uncomfortable shifting.  Like, it could be awhile…

But it’s going to depend very much on the 4 purchases I made this week.

See, here’s what I did….. I scoured the internet looking for affordable options.  RugsUSA, Overstock, Ebay, One Kings Lane, you name it and I probably looked through it.  You guys, this was hours of my life.  Wasted?!  Nope, happily spent looking at rugs that I COULD and might very well BUY.  Ahhh, the joys of looking through the window and coming home with a new puppy… except my puppy doesn’t pee or poop or cry all night.  It’s cuddly and cute, and doesn’t touch anything.

I also, kinda came to the conclusion that I really want an emerald sofa.  I know it’s been done.  I know it’s soooo green.  But I love the look and damn the haters!  Here is one that I’m totally going to put my butt on one of these days from Mod Shop.

With green lovely in mind, I purchased these 4 rugs from Overstock.  They just had the best prices, the best selection and the best return policy.

Traditional vintage is what Overstock is calling this rug… I’m not sure if it’s an oversell, but it’s kinda working since I bought it.  It’s like on a dating website when you read something that intrigues you… this is that rug; Is it worth a 1st date?  With Mr. TradVin, I really went back and forth… would it be horribly fake looking or super chic?  Will I be stuck paying for the expensive bottle of wine that it drank all by itself?  True Story.  Well, I’ll be letting you know in a few short days.

This grey rug, strangely called light blue on the website is made of viscose, which feels all silky and looks shiny and fancy.  I like the monochrome color and the viscose might just take the schnazzy factor up a notch.  Also, it’s got flecks of green in it… I kinda gotta see it.

I’d be hiding my emotions if I didn’t tell you that this Safavieh Valencia is right now in the lead.  That blue looks so good on my computer screen – do you think so too?  And with the green sofa?!  Get outta here!  It’s nice.  Real nice.  But look, I’ve been misled by colors before, so I couldn’t just put all my rug eggs into one shopping basket.

You may be wondering why the rug from Aladdin made the cut, but there are two very good reasons for it.  One, this rug is literally sending shivers of fear down my husband’s back as we speak (he despises this traditional look and I like to keep him on his toes) and two, I have a very good feeling about it.  I could be totally wrong, but I think red devil here could be a ringer…or maybe I’m just easily tempted by a daring choice.

So, what do you think?  Am I crazy to think about lugging 3 (possibly 4) ugly rugs back to UPS??  Have you done this in search of the perfect rug?

Oops, I did it again!

Hi there!!

Wonder what the heck I did again?!?!

Well… I found this here on. the. side. of. the. road.  AND, I PICKED IT UP!!

It’s an outdoor set – a loveseat and a 3 seater (what are those called?? Sofas?)

Anyhoo, no matter that the paint is chipping and the insides have seen better days.

All that can be repaired and all that is currently being repaired.

Just in time for a super cold winter.  Hey!  Don’t spoil my excitement.  These literally couldn’t have come at a more perfect time because after watching my Costco outdoor sofas fade in the Valley heat, they have been taken back to the motherland.  Yes, Costco being the wonderful, amazing company that they are took them back.  Almost 3 years later, I might add.  #clientforlife  (I also want to point out that I had called several times throughout the years about the product, since I began having issues after just a few months, so I’m not sure if this made a difference in the return.)

But after that experience I vowed to never buy resin wicker again.  I’m not saying it’s horrible everywhere, but it just could not stand the sun that we get here… honestly most things can’t.  It’s pretty brutal.

Now heaven has bestowed these beauties on me.  With the amazing price tag of free.  Ahhh, music to my wallet.  They are going to be so cozy, you will see.  And hopefully, a bit of chinoiserie will suit my backyard.

Wish me luck sanding this puppy!
